Robbins book preceeded Mario Puzo's book, the Godfather, by nine years. It is about a young Italian aristocrat, Count Cesare Cardinali, who owns everything to the Mafia. He races cars, chases women, and now he has been called upon to return the favor of the Mafia overlord., Don Emilio. He is asked to kill four witnesses who are going to testify against some very influential crime bosses. He was picked for this job because of his penchant towards killing that was shown during the war. He likes to use a stiletto--a long, slender, double edged, knife. He kills witnesses right under the noses of the FBI who are supposedly protecting their witnesses until the trial. Cesare wants nothing in return for his deeds, and that bothers the Mafia. The Mafia decides it must get rid of the count. The story is fast moving, full of intrigue, sex, and more killings than fingers on your hand.
