Seller's Description:
John Skeaping. Very Good Indeed in Good jacket. A scarce, first edition of this informative work on steeplechasing by amateur jockey, John Hislop. A very scarce first edition of this work, in the original publisher's green cloth binding with the unclipped dust wrapper and decorative, illustrated endpapers. Â This work was written by John Hislop, author and amateur jockey. Hislop was extremely involved in the horse-racing world, having owned and bred champion racehorse, Brigadier Gerard. He also competed in the Grand National. This horse-racing knowledge fed into Hislop's writing, with works including 'From Start to Finish' and 'Racing Reflections' being popular within the racing community. This particular work depicts different aspects of steeplechasing, including 'Riding Over Fences', 'Riding Bad Jumpers' and 'Tactics'. Hislop explains what is needed to excel at steeplechasing, the distance horse race containing many obstacles to jump over. With eight beautiful colour plates illustrated by English sculptor and equine painter, John Skeaping. Collated, complete. Many other illustrations and vignettes throughout. In the original publisher's green cloth binding with the unclipped dust wrapper and decorative endpapers. Externally, very smart, with fading to the extremities. Light bumping to the extremities and the odd mark to boards. A very small chip to the cloth at the front tail edge. Dust wrapper in good condition, with chipping and the odd tear to the extremities. Small loss to the head of the spine and to the upper front board of the wrap. Sunning to the wrap, mainly to the spine. The odd mark to the wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Very Good Indeed.
