It had been given because Pegasus, the winged horse of Olympus, had dropped there one of his pinions, or because the City lay spread out on either Side of the river in form like the outspread wings Of a bird. The fact that the ancient form Of the name was plural (tami) gives some colour to this latter explana tion; but it is more probable that the true meaning is to be found in a Semitic root signifying strength, like our burg/i, or borougfi. Josephus,1 fol lowed by many Jewish and some Christian scholars, identified it with the Tarshish of the Old Testament, the region from which the ships of Hiram and Solomon brought gold and silver and tin but there is now a general agreement that the latter country is found in Spain 3 and, as there is no Similarity whatever between its products and those of Cilicia, the identification must be rejected as the blunder of an imperfect know ledge misled by similarity of sound.
