Excerpt: ...actually had not, much human teaching; but (almost exclusively of instruments and means) had abundantly the teaching of the Spirit of God; so strikingly manifested in the deep heartfelt experience of the power of the truth, and its sanctifying influences in that strength, yet simplicity of faith, hope, and love, so visible in all the prayers he wrote, and all he said or did. "Never did 1 witness such energy, united with such peculiar and extraordinary child-like simplicity and sincerity; and never such an ex-ample and monument of the mere and sole teaching and power of the holy regenerating Spirit. "A christian friend advised him to embrace every interval of strength, and write his prayers and meditations, as a means of comfort to himself, not only at the time of writing, but afterwards, in perusing them when too weak to write. "This excellent plan he adopted, and wrote chiefly in the morning, when he enjoyed some little remissions of pain and languor, and for which purpose I always left him alone. "These prayers breathe the very spirit of simplicity, which was the chief feature of his character. His faith appeared to have no mixture of imperfection in it, for he simply and sincerely took for granted all that God said in his word; and was astonished to hear any of us express our own want of assurance of faith, or conscious and abiding sense of our personal interest in Christ. This to him was a mystery we never could explain, and which, happily for himself, he died in entire ignorance of.
