Carbon fiber reinforced composites (C/C) are materials widely used in structural components, especially when exposed to intense aerothermodynamic loads. Its high strength and exceptional fracture toughness, combined with its refractory properties, resistance to erosion, corrosion and wear make this material ideal for applications in structural components subjected to high temperatures, such as turbines and atmospheric re-entry vehicles. When used in inert atmospheres or in vacuum, C/C composites maintain their properties at temperatures above 2000???C. However, in oxidizing environments and high temperature conditions, the carbon fiber based composites suffer intense degradation due to the high catalyticity of reactions between carbon and oxygen, making it difficult and often impossible its use in aerospace devices.
