An unprecedented expos??? of Soviet espionage in the United States during the 1930s and 40s This stunning book, based on KGB archives that have never come to light before, provides the most complete account of Soviet espionage in America ever written. In 1993, former KGB officer Alexander Vassiliev was permitted unique access to Stalin-era records of Soviet intelligence operations against the United States. Years later, living in Britain, Vassiliev retrieved his extensive notebooks of transcribed documents from Moscow. With these notebooks John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr have meticulously constructed a new, sometimes shocking, historical account. Along with general insights into espionage tactics and the motives of Americans who spied for Stalin, Spies resolves specific, long-seething controversies. The book confirms, among many other things, that Alger Hiss cooperated with Soviet intelligence over a long period of years, that journalist I. F. Stone worked on behalf of the KGB in the 1930s, and that Robert Oppenheimer was never recruited by Soviet intelligence. Spies also uncovers numerous American spies who were never even under suspicion and satisfyingly identifies the last unaccounted for American nuclear spies. Vassiliev tells the story of the notebooks and his own extraordinary life in a gripping introduction to the volume.

ALGER HISS WAS A COMMUNIST!
SPIES: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America, would have altered American History had it been published back in the days when the UNITED NATIONS was being created by Alger Hiss, important U.S. State Dept. personage, architect of the United Nations, Communist, good buddy of President FD Roosevelt, and darling of intellectually elitists and this nation?s University professors.
Hiss, journeying beyond the footprints of dreamy-eyed one worlder, former President Wilson, was tried for treason, but charges were dropped because of the great and mysterious delay of the court proceedings. Although Hiss's indictment stemmed from now proven espionage, he could not be tried for that crime because the statue of limitations had expired. His ?two? trials did, however, give substance to Senator Joseph McCarthy?s sensational charges of communist infiltration into the State Department. Richard M. Nixon, a California Representative gained national recognition and the enmity of the nation?s ?leftists? due to his trial activities.
Papers hidden in a pumpkin patch were introduced against Hiss in the perjury trial. Hiss had supplied Whitaker Chambers with the stolen State Department papers so Chambers could pass them on to the Communists in Russia. Hiss was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison for lying, but escaped death for treason. He denied the charges of treason for the duration of his life, as he chased about presenting highly remunerative speeches to wildly appreciative, university audiences. His devotees throughout the nation continue denying his guilt.
In 1966 the Verona papers identified Hiss by describing him and his duties. The papers outlined his relationship with President Roosevelt. Also detailed was Hiss?s attendance with Roosevelt at the Yalta Conference. Hiss?s trip to Russia was, also, revealed. Hiss met there with the Russian Commissar for foreign affairs and received a Russian commendation for a job well done.
Now in 2009, former KGB officer Alexander Vassiliev received unique access to Stalin-era records and now gives us the true record of the treasonous behavior of Alger Hiss. Hiss is identified as a traitor by name along with scores of other ?good? Americans who turned Communist. The Hiss deeds are detailed in all their ugliness. Let the defenders of Hiss now eat their words! The proof of treason is all laid out here.
