Donal de Roiste deserves better!
There is no question that Donal de Roiste deserves a serious investigation into the circumstances of his 1969 forced retirement from the Irish Defense Forces, however, this book falls short in achieving the goal. By going off on tangants and spending too much time on the authors own hypothosis, Don Mullan, failed to pursue the questions that De Roiste, himself ,asks and still deserves to have answered by the Irish government. ( i.e. Who framed him? What was the charge? Why no trial etc?)
This book needed serious editing. I would advise a reader to skip quickly through the maudlin first half of the book and concentrate on the second half. The second half of the book, carefully analayzes documentation from military files. The reader will find the gaps and ambiguities in the files and other information raises significant questions, that continue to be unanswered by those in power.
The importance of this book remains, ultimately, in what can be learned about De Roiste and his battle to clear his name! And that makes for fascinating reading!
