As Ibizan getaways became increasingly international and commercial in the early '00s, the notorious Balearic island's most extravagant club, Space, unsurprisingly commodified itself conveniently in the form of Space Ibiza 2002. The double-disc album features two mixes showcasing the two sides of the very large club, the "terrace" and "inside," each of which embodies a different style of music. The "terrace" mix by club resident Jonathan Ulysses veers toward the sunnier side of dance music, compiling numerous Latin house tracks. The "inside" mix by club resident DJ Reche conversely veers toward the darker side, compiling mostly progressive trance. Given Ibiza's Mediterranean locale, it's not surprising that both DJs go with mostly European tracks, many of them drawn from Italy. These tracks may not generally be chart-toppers, but quite a few do come from the United States and the United Kingdom, including a few each from the New York-based label Wave (Eternal Sun's "Time to Celebrate," for instance) and the London-based label Hook (Christopher Lawrence's "New Day"). Both Ulysses and Reche give one- or two-sentence explanations in the liner notes about what makes each of the album's 29 tracks special. It's a nice gesture for anyone hoping to learn more about what makes Space such an extraordinary club. Beyond the insightful track-by-track explanations, the music itself is really all you need if you indeed want to learn about Space. Both Ulysses and Reche move through their respective sets with grace, highlighting both the Latin house and progressive trance styles that have become synonymous with not only Space but Ibiza in general. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi
