Excerpt from Sons of Francis II. I make no claim to have written a book without bias. The whole subject is prickly with controversy. The early Franciscan movement, as I have said, was a continuous warfare, and not only with the world of sin. There was war to the knife among its own adherents. The strife has lasted to this very hour, and seems to grow in intensity. I know no question Of social economy or of politics which divides, as does this one, its students to-day. It rouses heated passions, calls out abusive and scornful language, provokes withering attacks. Those who write coolly are, in the main, mere mechanical com pilers. A lively interest involves ranging yourself de finitely on one side or the other; for the questions at issue are as big with import to - day as when they were first mooted, and that was long before Saint Francis appeared in the world. Scholars may think themselves quite detached from the concerns Of the present, and when they wax hot over the religious history of more than six hundred years ago, may congratulate themselves on the intensity of their intellectual interest. But, con sciously or not, they are partisans in a struggle Of their own hour. It is not the question Of the supreme authority of the Catholic Church that divides them, any more than it divided the men over whom they quarrel now. The separation lies far deeper, springs from an ideal half concealed, half revealed, as much social as religious, never realised, yet always dimly felt, an ideal that has divided, that will eternally divide the world till the millennium.
