What Hawkeye Did Next ?
Song of the Mohicans is a non-canon sequel to Fennimore-Cooper's classic, picking up the story a few weeks later. Paul Block confesses he was influenced by the Michael Mann movie and I think this shows. Indeed, I began to wonder whether he'd ever read any of the other books in the original series. His Hawkeye is younger and less self-assured than the original Natty Bumpo and falls for the tacked-on love interest a bit too easily. Too much of the story is predictable and the characterisation is too insubstantial for this to ever be considered a classic in the same way as the Fennimore-Cooper tales. Interesting, but not worth the effort it took me to track it down.
