Seller's Description:
Introduction by Hamish Miles. Illustrations and hand illuminations by Valenti Angelo. Small 4to. Vellum spine with gilt lettering/decorations and blue paper over boards with gilt/orange/blue emblem. xiii, 138pp. Top edge gilt. Hand-colored illustrations. Very good. Faintest of edgewear; lacks slipcase. A tight and nice copy of this early LEC production, 7th title in their 9th series--a celebrated translation of the epic 11th century French narrative poem. Colophon at rear of second volume cites 1500 numbered copies (this #273) signed boldly by illustrator Angelo. Laid in is the publisher's small heavy stock announcement card. Interestingly, front flyleaf bears the custom bookplate (nude figure drinking at a river's edge) of Paul Cushing Child (1902-94), American diplomat and civil servant better known as Mr. Julia Child, husband of the pioneering celebrity chef and cookbook guru--not surprising that the chef who popularized French cuisine in mainstream America and her husband, both devout francophiles, would own this classic of French literature. NEWMAN 102.
