Excerpt from Somersetshire Parishes: A Handbook of Historical Reference to All Places in the County The book has been compiled for the convenience of those interested in local history, a small body of intelligent people which exists in every County, wishing to know more of the past history of their Parishes, their districts, and their homes. Perhaps the three most attractive subjects to commend to the study of any one possessing a love of research are the studies of men, of books, and of places. These three subjects necessarily interweave themselves and overlap one another. Each absorbs a lifetime and there is no better hobby than any one. My own hobby has been the study of places, with a strong leaning towards those of Somersetshire. The result has been that I have collected a large quantity. Of historical notes, and three years ago, finding that these notes were, from their extent, becoming unmanageable, I decided to arrange them as far as possible under Parishes, and print the work for such few as cared to buy.
