Malina's & Pilch's Social Science Commentary on the Letters of Paul is an insightful work that sheds light on the cultural aspects of the "Letters of Paul." First, it is important for readers to understand what these two authors mean by the "Letters of Paul." Modern scholars tend to divide Paul's letters into two groups: "authentic" letters (meaning letters Paul actually wrote or dictated) and "unauthentic" letters (letters usually written by a disciple of Paul). Thus for Malina and Pilch, the "letters of Paul" that they comment on are the "authentic" letters. This includes for them 1 Thessalonians, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Romans, Philippians, and Philemon. If the purchaser does not understand this one could be greatly disappointed in this work. Second, Malina and Pilch greatly increase our understanding of 1st century culture, practices and customs. This 1st century cultural understanding sets this work apart from others that tend to read modernist and postmodernist Christian morality, politics, theology, culture and pop-Christian practice into the texts of Paul. If one were interested in understanding these letters from how Paul's first recipients would have heard them, this work would be an excellent place to start. Third, this work is reader friendly. Anyone can read this simple, straightforward commentary. In fact, the book ends with a 77-page "Reading Scenarios" section that gives invaluable insights into the cultural thinking and practices of the 1st century person. If one struggles through the commentary, these pages may reveal further understanding. These pages are worth the prize of the book itself.
