Considers the life and work of English architect and builder Francis Smith (1672-1738), "whose architectural and building practice spread over a huge area from north Wales to Surrey, from Dorset to Lincolnshire. Though born n Staffordshire, the son of a master-builder of Wolverhampton, Smith came to prominence with his elder brother through their contribution to the rebuilding of Warwick after the disastrous fire of 1694. Thereafter Smith rapidly established a properous country-house practice centred in the Midlands and gained a wide reputation for reliability and honesty. Many of these houses survive, including such imposing buildings as Stoneleigh Abbey in Warwickshire, Chicheley Hall in Buckinghamshire and Mawley Hall in Shropshire.
