They had not advanced very far, however, before they were startled by the sound of an approaching automobile. The machine was moving at such a rapid rate that it was impossible for them to flee, and almost before they were aware of what was occurring the swiftly moving car was almost upon them. The sight of the two boys instantly caused the two occupants of the automobile to stop while one of them called sharply to them. "Keep your finger on the trigger," whispered Earl to Jesse Tiger, as he hastily decided that he would meet the men and listen to what they had to say. At the worst there were only two of them and doubtless they were not suspicious that the men whom they had halted had ventured so far from the lines of the Allies. Naturally they would be taken for Germans, and as has been said Earl spoke German fluently and he was hopeful that he might be able to gain some information. Behind it all also was a lurking hope that by taking these two men off their guard he might add them both to the number of prisoners whom the Allies recently had secured.
