As the cold, blustery planes of the windswept Sahara Desert ushered in the first winter rainstorm the region had seen in 50 years, director George Lucas solemnly went about filming his third major feature film, cursing the endless problems that beleaguered his set. The year was 1976, and Lucas couldn't have dreamed where this mess of malfunctioning robot costumes and slightly hokey dialogue was going to take him next. The answer, as outlined by author Dale Pollock in this unauthorized biography of Lucas, was tremendous and unprecedented worldwide success for the filmmaker and his movie, STAR WARS. Published in 1983 on the eve of the release of the third part in Lucas's sci-fi trilogy--RETURN OF THE JEDI--Pollock's book draws on some 60 hours of recorded conversations with the normally reclusive director, as well as anecdotes from friends, colleagues, and a few adversaries. The detailing of Lucas's two pre-STAR WARS movies, THX 1138 (1971) and AMERICAN GRAFFITI (1973), highlight his frustrations at the hands of a meddling studio system; both films were re-edited without the director's permission. Pollock emphasizes how this hardened and molded the naturally shy director, a process that was compounded by his falling out with former friend Francis Ford Coppola over the making of APOCALYPSE NOW, which Lucas was originally slated to direct. The chapters on STAR WARS and the resultant sequels (which Lucas produced, but didn't direct) make up the bulk of Pollock's book, offering some compelling tales of the trials, tribulations, and ultimate successes of Lucas's dream project. An account of the director's premature retirement closes out SKYWALKING, although the updated edition includes a further passage, written in 1999, about Lucas's triumphant return to the business with the three prequels to the original STAR WARS saga.
