Oh, where do I begin with my disappointment? This novel was a fluffy mess that kept all the same cons with the first book and threw out all the pros. It was mostly a big wall of plot dialogue, few creepy scenes that were anticlimactic as hell, and way too much cheesy comedy instead of horror. Skitter lacked so much fun panicky, tense atmosphere and deaths that The Hatching brought to the table. There were a few scenes, but the spiders' kill count was seriously lacking. I saw that we still got an excess of new viewpoints, more major characters introduced to the already seriously bloated cast, and pretty useless side-characters distracting from the ones brought up in the previous book. Instead of doing much with multiple characters presented in The Hatching, a decent amount of them may as well have been forgotten about. I'm MOSTLY talking about the scottish group on the isle and to some extent Agent Mike Rich and his family. After finishing this one and Zero Day, I'm facing it, this series is just plain fluff. It hands-down would have been much better as one big abridged book instead of a trilogy.
Now we address the issue of the accuracy with the entomologists. As quite a bit of what had me loving the first one was the fair amount of accuracy from the entomologist, seeing her and Julie take a nose-dive in accuracy by stating a facebook-grade myth as a fact absolutely ruined it for me. That myth being that the harvestman (daddy long-legs) has the deadliest venom of all spiders but no ability to penetrate human skin. They neither have venom nor are even spiders, they belong to the order Opiliones, which are arachnids, but not a spider. They're as much a spider as a scorpion is. I know it isn't in Skitter, but I'm complaining about it here too since it's the same characters: you get a very exaggeratedly false bit about Theraphosid lifespans not even a quarter way into Zero Day. In summary, if the whole world is riding on this entomology team, humanity's absolutely screwed.
