Am conscious, too, that what has been written renders me amenable to the charge of egotism. As this could not be avoided I accept the situation - from necessity. If any one supposes the following pages to be a sketch Of the life of Frederic F. Cavada, he will find out his error before he reads very far. It is only a statement Of what I knew about him, and I have prepared it solely for the information Of those gentlemen who, under the belief he was alive, aided me in trying to save his life, that they may understand why I was so persistent in the demands made upon them the fourth and fifth Of July.
