I loved the book (and the movie). My students were touched by them also. Anything that would move high school students at an alternative school, well, has to be worth buying, reading, and applying.
The opening of the book tells how a middle school decides to study the Holocaust. Before long, not only are the students learning and growing as human beings, but also the school staff and town.
This book was a tool to use in Service Learning and History. How do you measure 6 million lives? Six million! And a child shall lead them....what an idea....collecting paper clips. One for each life lost in the Holocaust. Before long paper clips are coming from all over the world along with letters. The letters were so touching.
After collecting all those paperclips, then how about a memorial to house them? What a feat! This is an incredible and moving story about a small school with high expectations.
Do yourself a favor and read this book. Then buy the movie. Finally, go out and do something good for someone, just because it is the right thing to do. .....peace

PERSISTENCE HELPS!!
THIS IS A GREAT TEACHING TOOL FOR, EVERYONE!!! THEY WERE PERSISTENT AND, DID NOT, TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER!!! THE CATTLE CAR WAS, A STROKE OF GENIUS. WHAT A SYMBOLIC CONTANIER FOR THE PAPER CLIPS!! IT IS A SOLEMN AND SOMBER MONUMENT TO ALL, THE VICTIMS OF HITLERS MADNESS. THE LESSON SUNK IN TO, EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE PROCESS!! MANY WERE AWARE BUT, SO MANY MORE PEOPLE FOUND THE SENSLESSNES OF SO, MUCH DESTRUCTION OF LIVES. EVERY ONE WHO DID NOT FIT THE ARYAN PROFILE, WERE, LESS THAN NOTHING. IT IS COMPARABLE TO THE RACISIM STILL, GOING ON IN THE WORLD TODAY WILL IT EVER, CEASE? IT IS S WONDERFUL AND, WORTHWHILE PROJECT!! I WISH EVEY LAST ONE OF US WOULD TAKE THE MESSAGE TO HEART!! THANK YOU, SHIRLEY
