Watts is an important pioneer in the mathematics of networks. He writes well and often with wit. However, he is handicapped, I think, by being too familiar with the technical side of the phenomena he is seeking to explain; he errs on the side of making wordy, often wooden explanations of the mathematics involved. This makes the book heavy sledding for the lay reader and diminishes its usefulness for the mathematically adept. He would have done better to lean farther one way or the other.
