In 1962 Nixon was at a low point in his life, yet he was planning a political comeback. His efforts were successful because of the intensity of his will and his dogged determination. In just six years he became President of the United States and leader of the free world. Tragically in another six years his character flaws caused him to lose everything. His career started in 1946 when he was elected to the U.S. Congress and to the Senate four years later. President Eisenhower selected him to be Vice President in 1952. In 1960 he was doing well. Then in 1960, he lost the presidential election to John F. Kennedy. This blow seemed to end his public life. The next January, after his Vice Presidential term ended, he returned home to California. He intended to retire from politics and practice law.

Six Crises was Nixon's response to the John F. Kennedy book, Profiles in Courage, which described the courage of eight US Senators. Kennedy sent Nixon a copy of his book, which Nixon thanked him for the next day. In 1961, following his 1960 presidential defeat to Kennedy, Nixon was encouraged by Mamie Eisenhower to write a book about his experiences. On April 20, he visited Kennedy in the White House where Kennedy urged him to write a book; he said that doing so would raise the public image of any public man. Nixon met with a Doubleday book editor the same month. Years later, Nixon's editor at Doubleday, Kenneth McCormick, recounted: "I enjoyed working with him on 'Six Crises. ' He had the concept for the book. He had the whole thing in his head, but he said, 'I'm not much of a writer, ' and I said, 'I know. ' So Nixon talked the book into a tape recorder and another writer came in to help. Then Nixon said, 'Why don't I try the chapter on defeat? In the course of doing this I think I've learned to write. I will always be grateful to President Nixon for ending the Vietnam draft the spring of my senior HS year in 1973. But then the Watergate saga left me with a strong impression of his darker side. Imagine my surprise, then, to learn that he was perhaps the best prepared man in history to become president, and that he is an American Horatio Alger story. I happened to be in LA this winter and so I sought out the Nixon museum at his birthplace. And that visit prompted me to buy this book. I found the book fascinating. It is very well written by Nixon himself. It is a window on the 50s that I had not previously known of. And the incidents described, and his reaction to each of them, show a new side to his character largely at odds with his Watergate reputation. No mistake, a few of his traits from that later time peek through, especially in his sixth crisis (the 1960 presidential election) but that made the book all the more fascinating to me. An argument might be made that the seeds of Watergate were sown in certain fraudulent Texas and Illinois precinct results, leaving him feeling cheated for "playing by the rules" against the Democrats.And the seeds of the bombing of Hanoi and the illegal invasion into Laos can be seen in his conviction that Communists would only negotiate with those they respected as tough. All in all, a new and welcome more-balanced perspective for me on a man with great gifts, great contributions to our nation, and great faults, but who came to be widely respected in political circles for his foreign policy expertise after his fall from grace.

Six Crises
"Six Crises" is one of many books written by former President Richard Nixon (1913-1994). This is a fast-moving and highly readable political memoir describing Nixon's years as a congressman, senator, and vice-president with Dwight D. Eisenhower during the late 1940s and 1950s. The six crises described are as follows: the Alger Hiss case, the "supplemental fund" speech (also known as the "Checkers" speech), Eisenhower's heart attack (1955), Nixon's visit to Caracas, Venezuela (1958), the "Kitchen Debate" with Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev in 1959, and finally, the presidential election of 1960 in which Nixon narrowly lost to Senator John F. Kennedy. This book presents an insightful snap-shot of the political events of the Cold War during the 1950s. Highly recommended.

INTERESTING INSIGHTS
I have not read all of Nixon's books, but I have got to say that this is one of the best. The six episodes that compose the book are six important history facts that the author describes fully and in the meantime explains the reader the effect that they had inside him . Nixon shares with the reader his thoughts, feelings towards them in a very sincere way. Then the historical happenings themselves are told in a precise way as regards main facts and details as to let the reader immerge in the situation. And last but not least, of course, there is the worthy way of the former President to write. Highly recommended.
