Seller's Description:
Nonny Hogrogian. Very Good+ Condition in Near Fine jacket. Book. Stories in rhyme. Signed by Illustrator. An English version, freely translated from the German by Elizabeth Shub with woodcuts by Nonny Hogrogian. Warmly inscribed by the artist with a drawing of a pear (which is central to the story): "For [name], | with pleasure and a [pear], | [signature]." From the front flap: "Theodor Fontaine's disarming poem, still taught to schoolchildren of Germany, has for generations remained a much-quoted and anthologized favorite in that country. How Sir Ribbeck outwitted his miserly son and made sure that the village children would be supplied with pears from his tree even after his death will win the admiration of readers of all ages. Nonny Hogrogian's rich, humorous woodcuts bring Sir Ribbek and his village magnificently to life and turn a nineteenth century classic into a warm and modern picture book." Hogrogian won the 1966 Caldecott medal for "Always Room for One More." This is the first American edition. Size: Oblong 18 x 25 cm. 32 pages. Item Type: Book. Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. Hardcover bound in illustrated cloth over boards matching the dust jacket. Corners are sharp with no wear. Minimal wear to the head and foot of the spine. No foxing in this copy. The unclipped ($4.95) dust jacket has a slight bit of wear at the edges, more so at the head and foot of the spine. There is a small closed tear at the foot of the front panel that has been repaired with archival paper tape. There is a small strip of adhesive tape on the back of the jacket, which was used to hold a clear sleeve in place. The jacket is now protected in a clear archival Brodart sleeve (with no tape! ).
