While researching the Peninsular War I have read a number of biographies of Moore, plus a number of book on the retreat from Corunna, and as many of his journals and letters as I have access to. For superb scholarship and detail offered this book cannot be surpassed. It is further enhanced by being eminently readable. One of the book's strongest features is that it does much to explain the controversy that has surrounded Sir John Moore, examinating his relation with both Castlereagh and George Canning. I strongly recommend the book to students and to those who simply read for enjoyment. I also recommend Ms. Oman's "Nelson," and Sir Charles Oman's "History of the Peninsular War ," particularly Vols. 1 and 2.
