Excerpt from Sir James Outram's Persian Campaign in 1857 Comprising After remaining for two days in the Persian camp to recruit his men, General Outram set out on his return for Bushire on the 7 th, having carried off immense stores of provision from Boorasjoon, and destroyed vast quantities of ammunition. At 1 1 O'clock of the same night, however, his rear-guard was attacked by the Persians, and the battle soon became general. General Outram formed a square for the protection of the maga zines and baggage; but while riding back, on the rear-guard being attacked, the General was thrown from his horse and disabled for several hours. He, however, recovered in time to reassume the command at daybreak on the 8th, when the action recommenced. The brilliant charge Of the 3rd Bombay Light Cavalry, who broke through a solid square of infantry and utterly cut up an entire regiment, decided the fate of the day. In about an hour from the time the first shot was fired, the Persians were flying in every direction, leaving 700 dead on the field, 100 prisoners and two guns; it was only owing to the paucity of cavalry on our side, that they escaped annihilation. Such was the battle of Kooshab. The accompanying despatches and letters, giving full details of the bravery displayed by the officers and men, will serve as a record of one Of the most brilliant actions which our anglo-indian troops can inscribe on their colours.
