This is an excellent book about the World War I Christmas truce. The entire book is written based on eyewitness accounts and testimony from letters written by troops involved. The book is amazingly well-researched and based on solid facts. It tells the story from the beginning of the truce, to the soldiers sharing gifts, songs, stories, contact information for after the war, and even a game of football (soccer). The only problem I can see with this book is that it assumes the reader already knows something about World War I in general. If you are not familiar with any of the details of WWI, you may want to start with a different book. This book gives a lot of names, ranks, places, and jumps back and forth a lot. All in all, Silent Night is, at the very least, a touching true story of "horror taking a holiday", as People magazine put it. At best, we can hope to take something away from the story and learn the true meaning of peace.
