Invaluable If Shared Appropriately
"A picture is worth a thousand words," but in the case of SHOW ME! A PICTURE BOOK OF SEX FOR CHILDREN AND PARENTS all of the pictures would be inappropriate without words from the mouths of the parents. Open, truthful, and straightforward communication between the parent and child on human sexuality, reproduction, and childbirth is necessary before, during, and after the sharing of this book by parent and child. This is not the type of book that a parent can hand a child and expect the child to learn from it independently. Nor is this book appropriate for children at any age. The parent, as the person who knows the child the best, is the best person to determine at what age this book would be appropriate for each individual child. The pictures, which are black and white photographs by Will McBride, are very graphic - depicting just about all aspects of human sexuality, reproduction, and childbirth involving young children, older, opposite- and same-sex children, and adults. The book, which also contains a guide for parents written by Dr. Helga Fleischhauer-Hardt, is an invaluable tool that demystifies, and dispels ignorance, with regard to human sexuality. Children who are openly, truthfully, and appropriately taught, and are knowledgeable, about their own bodies and sexuality, would be more likely to grow up with respect for their own and others' bodies and sexuality, and make informed and responsible decisions regarding their sexuality.
