This book has it all: beautiful illustrations with children realistically drawn and art that captures both child and adult interest. It is suitable for children ages 4 yrs through 8 yrs with 40 large pages having at most a paragraph of writing and sometimes only a sentence on a page. The beautiful words are best read aloud. It is a personal account of one African American family from slavery on a Virginia plantation, the underground railroad and the slave quilts called show ways, civil rights marches, and school integration to today. It is factual and sensitive but not scary. The author wrote this book for her own 4 year old daughter and with each generation the refrain is repeated: "And she loved that baby up so, yes she loved that baby up."
