This magnificent 2008 recording of Shostakovich's mighty Seventh Symphony with Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic is even better than the magnificent 1995 RCA recording with the same performers. The difference between the two is not one of timing, since most of the movements come in at nearly the same length, or of playing, because in both the St. Petersburg musicians perform with almost superhuman strength, and not even interpretation, because Temirkanov is still swinging for the fence and still hitting it out of the ballpark. The difference, perhaps, is that this recording is live, and the audience's energy and enthusiasm is reflected and amplified by musicians, resulting in a performance of staggering power, unrelenting passion, and wholehearted belief in the greatness of the music.
