Lazlo Bane's first EP, Short Style, is filled with solid hooks and pop melodies that are extremely listener-friendly but not unique or memorable. The EP's best track is "Buttercup," a straightforward guitar/bass/drums song that starts with a lone guitar and then explodes into a frenetic tale about a fiery car wreck, a trial and the ensuing conviction. "Novakane" follows a similar formula. The ballad "Sleep" has what sounds like a toy piano behind lullaby lyrics and quiet guitars. "Overkill" is the band's cover of the Men at Work tune, and it features a cameo by Men at Work singer Colin Hay. Although it's a good effort and has some noisier guitar parts than the original, it sounds too similar to Men at Work's version. The EP closes with "Prada Wallet," the only song that does not appear on the band's debut full-length, 11 Transistor. "Prada Wallet" is a minute-long jaunt that sneers at a girlfriend's missing birthday gift. In all, Short Style is another mediocre alternative pop EP that is enjoyable, but ultimately forgettable. ~ Tracy Frey, Rovi
