There is no "if" except for us. But let us search and try our own hearts, for no words can describe the difference implied by this little word, and its infinite and eternal importance to us. Wonderful that now, while two are side by side here, the Lord beholds this vast, deep difference between one and another--that one perhaps loves Him, the other loves Him not. Love is a feeling of the heart, a feeling we are conscious of. We cannot love without being conscious that we do. It is an emotion, an affection. With regard to earthly objects it is so--husband, wife, parent, child, brother, sister, friend, it is a conscious feeling: and with regard to our Saviour it is so too. Some humble souls indeed hardly dare to think they love Him; only they know they wish to: yet their heart tells them they do, and the very wish shows it. But is it possible to think we do, when we do not? May an impulsive nature mistake natural warmth of feeling for love to the Lord? May a momentary glow of emotion mislead? To meet this danger, He who knows what is in man gave us this test: "If any one love Me, he will keep My words"; and again: "If ye love Me, keep My commandments." It is for us, as well as for Peter and James and John. It is thus that we are to try our love. We know our Lord's words almost as well as they did. They are written for us--many of them by John himself, taught by the Spirit. If we love Him, we shall keep His words; keep them in every sense. Do we not cherish the words of our departed?
