Besides which--had not these " Galilean men" a mighty work to do? a work of saving efficacy, requiring persevering faith, self-denying effort, patient waiting, and the time but short to do it in. Why did they, then, "stand gazing," and stand idle? (see St. Matt. xx. 3, 6.) Did they " stand," too, somewhat sorrowful? Perhaps the very shadow of this, their first real sorrow, was seen to flit over their countenance; and even this would surprise the Angels. For to them the wonder would have been, if Jesus had stayed any longer upon earth. His work was done: why should He tarry? The world is sin-stained; is it a fit place for Him, in whom is no sin? Oh, no. And therefore the Light of the World was withdrawing the visible form of His presence to the world above, "which the glory of God doth lighten, and the Lamb is the Light thereof" (Rev. xxi. 23). "The Son of God" was returning to share that "glory, which He had with the Father before the world was" (St. John xvii. 5). Still, His words were fulfilled. "If ye loved Me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father" (xiv. 38). For they did love Him, and so, after the Angels' words, the widowed Church, in the person of those lone disciples, "returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and was continually in the Temple, praising and blessing God" (St. Luke xxiv. 52, 53). After His Resurrection, He shewed Himself "Heascendea alive to His disciples by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days" (Acts i. 3).
