Very Good+ in Very Good-dust jacket. 8vo 8"-9" tall; 507 pages; Prior ownership of Kate Smith with her large pictorial bookplate to the front pastedown. 1st printing; this is a review copy, so stamped on the front endpage with publication date (April 9, 1942) and issue price ($3.75) included in the stamp face. Square, snugly bound copy. Text clean and unmarked. Dust jacket is moderately toned and lightly shelf soiled with rubbing at edges. Small chip missing from lower edge of front jacket panel and a larger 1" x 2" chip missing from the lower edge of the rear panel. Prior owner has tape reinforced the spine ends and lower edge, including over the missing areas affected by the chips. Kate Smith's engraved bookplate is quite large about 4" x 6" and includes ten discrete pictorial elements. Most prominent of the bookplate's features are a radio microphone and a Stars and Stripes crest. Also featured are sporting scenes of skiing, swimming and basketball, a woman fishing, a nurse and a pair of disabled veteran soldiers. Glue used to mount the plate has lightly stained the plate at a few points along the edges and lightly offset the facing endpage. Solid dustjacketed copy with noteworthy provenance. Kate Smith bookplates are particularly uncommon. VG+/VG-
