Mircea, as pointed out by others never hunted with the Koryak or danced through the night with the San. But he read voraciously and reviewed in masterly fashion. The chief defect of this particular work is Mircea's fixed view that drugs are bad so must be a late degradation of the original pure ritual. He is happy with drums, dancing, chanting and flagellation but take a plant entheogen and he is ready to condemn the practice. Obviously this is not good scholarship. Late in life he did recant on this prejudice but only in correspondence.. So take this book with a heavy pinch of salt.

A classic in modern anthropology?
Eliade, Mircea. Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy. In this classic of modern anthropology and comparative religion, Mircea Eliade explores in depth the concept of shamanism from an ethnological perspective. With ample case evidence from diverse shamanic cultures, the author determines its characteristic traits, performers, uses and roles within the host culture. Written in a clear and concise language, Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy may be read from cover to cover or used as a reference text, thus being strongly recommended.
