Shakib is an alumnus of Bangladesh Institute of Sports Education (BKSP). Shakib became the number one all-rounder in January 2015 as the first and only cricketer in every edition of Test, ODI and T20 cricket according to the ICC Player Rankings. He became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to score 4,000 in one-day cricket and became the highest individual run scorer (216) in a Test on 13 January 2016.
