Soon they would surround him, silver nets shooting out to catch him in their sticky tracery. Then a Winger would come to take him away. Back to the Dorms. Or...straight to the Meat Factory. Gold-Eye thought of that, bile suddenly filling his mouth. Then he turned to face the Myrmidons and hefted his steel spike. 'Kill me!' he screamed at the tall shapes approaching through the fog. 'Kill me!' The city seems empty of human life, but there are people - a desperate few - living precariously among the ruins. They are Shade's Children, and all they have is each other, their Change Talents - and Shade, who masterminds their struggle against the pitiless Overlords. But who, or what, is Shade? And where does his allegiance really lie?

This is one of those great books that is marketed towards children, but is incredibly satisfying to read as an adult. Shade's Children is a post-apocalyptic vision of a world where all children must die on their 14th birthday. It's a great read, the sort of book that stimulates you as much as it stimulates the child you are reading it to. It's a wonderful book: smart, funny, scary. The ending is pitch perfect. Good work, Mr. Nix.

Again, excellence
I picked this book up not expecting it to be good. I had read about this book and it didn't make it sound interesting...man was I wrong! This was an amazing book! Again, Garth Nix suprised me by how interesting of a book he can write about a completly different subject than the books I had read before. I haveto admitt it wasn't as good as the Abhorsen trilogy, but still an excellent read. Pick it up and read it if you get the chance!
