Signed with an inscription from the authors to the title page, dedicated to Henry Hide "in affection of years of friendship" dated April, 1964. Illustrated with forty-eight plates and thirty-seven in-text drawings and maps. Collated complete. A biography of Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, an Anglo-Irish Antarctic explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic. He was one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Written with access to his previously unpublished papers, diaries, and correspondence, including significant and moving letters to his wife. Written by Margery Lilian Edith Fisher, a British literary critic and academic, and her husband James Maxwell McConnell Fisher, a British author, editor, broadcaster, naturalist and ornithologist. Illustrated by W. E. How, a British artist who served with the Endurance expedition. Previously held in the library of John M. Levison, a British physician and President of the Explorer's Club from 1985 to 1987. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Front hinge starting but firm. Original price-clipped dust wrapper is worn with wear and light chipping to the extremities. Front panel detached with creases to the front panel and spine. Sunning to the spine with the odd small mark to the panels. The odd small closed tear to the edges. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Authors' ink inscription to the title page with previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Very Good.
