The peasant, whose back ached, betrayed some envy in the dense gutturals of his monosyllabic response. Unexpectedly and unwarrantably the amiable trifler now grew didactic, began to suggest, to instruct, to relate how much better things were done in Prince Chardo's noble vineyards; in fact, to meddle and dictate. The vintner responded wrathfully that he wanted none of that. "If you really don't care about get ting on,"--Florio shrugged his shoulders. The old man deliberately seated himself on the ground, drew a small bottle of beer and some black bread from a basket behind a currant bush, and, eyeing his environment disapprovingly, silently partook of his Vesper.
