Un singulier spectacle nous frappa: toutes les femmes se pressaient a la porte, et en meme temps tous les chevaux de la garnison. Par un juste instinct du danger, ils avaient rompu leurs licols a l'ecurie ou renverse leurs cavaliers, et attendaient en piaffant que la campagne leur fut ouverte. Ils couraient par les cours, a travers les troupeaux de femmes, hennissant avec epouvante, la criniere herissee, les narines ouvertes, les yeux rouges, se dressant debout contre les murs, respirant la poudre, et cachant dans le sable leurs naseaux brules.
