Excellent insight on China medicine system under M
Sidel and Sidel provide an accurate , well-detailed account of the medical system in China under Mao, upon which the 1978 World Health Organization Alma Ata was based. They illuminate the multi-faceted and tiered appraoch inherent within the Barefoot Doctor program and effectively dispel the misconceptions about how doctors of western medicine and Chinese medicine served along with community health workers.
This is a must for any person involved in Medical policy, medicine, medical and/or cultural anthropology or anyone interested in Asian studies. It most precisely articulates the cultural values while also substantiating its applicability within the medical system. After reading the first few chapters, one realizes the inherent wisdom within Mao's medical system. After all, any doctor who needs more practice remains within the city. Good doctors, other than the few within the city who oversee doctors who need to hone their own sills, are sent to the countryside, where there is no room for error.
