What is there not to be thankful for? Everything is working for the best and for all! What more could God Himself desire? What more could He do? His finite creatures have only to lift up their souls to be filled with His joy, and to open their lips and let their mouth shew forth His praise. Such souls will only speak good of His name; out of hearts so thankful can only come words of trust and adoration. While people are moaning with their aches and pains, or weeping even unselfishly over the wrongs of man to man, the believing soul will still rejoice in God, and hush the murmuring lips with assurances of God's fidelity, wisdom, and love. He will not make apologies for God after the manner of the Christian and say the Devil was too much for Him! or paint Him as a merciless creditor standing on his rights at law; or as a blood-thirsty ogre delighting in human sacrifice. Nor will he, as the modern atheist, the child of Christianity, imply that if there be a God, He does not know what He is about; or cannot help Himself; or more openly deny His existence and control altogether. No, he will speak good of His name. Nothing can ever make him believe that God is less good than himself, less loving than the tender heart of His own creature. Better to have no religion at all than one which falters on this great theme, and in hesitating whispers ventures humbly to hope that God knows what He is about and that He has not forgotten us in the magnitude of His tremendous...
