True, Sony Music Special Products' September Gurls only has a handful of charting hits -- "If She Knew What She Wants," "Walking Down Your Street," "Be With You" -- but it actually does a terrific job of illustrating why the Bangles in their prime were so good. Apart from the three tunes from Everything ("Be With You," "I'll Set You Free," "Crash and Burn"), which are good but a little anonymous, the collection spotlights the band's exceptional skills as interpretive pop-rockers, as well as their knack for turning out irresistible guitar-pop originals. Apart from the two big hits from Different Light, the compilation also contains the two MTV hits from their debut ("Hero Takes a Fall," "Going Down to Liverpool"), their excellent cover of Big Star's "September Gurls," and two more highlights from All Over the Place ("Dover Beach," "James"). September Gurls remains just a sampler, but there's so much good music here that it makes a good bargain for budget-minded casual fans looking for a compilation instead of the actual albums. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
