"selfportrait.map" charts the development of the collaborative work by artists Lilla LoCurto and William Outcault from 1992 to the present, culminating in a series of self portraits generated from three dimensional body scans. Employing a full-body scanner, traditional cartography software, and another software to make the two compatible, the artists began to produce photographic self-portraits as map projections. LoCurto/Outcault set about this inquiry as a way to "deconstruct the human form in terms of its volume, rendering it in absolute two-dimensions." This volume accompanies an exhibition of 18 of these images. Helaine Posner is an independent curator living in New York. David Gerlenter is art critic for the Weekly Standard and author of "Machine Beauty: Elegance and the Heart of Technology".
