Unfortunately, Bret Harte's writing career foundered after his early successes in the 1860s. Yet he continued to shape the nineteenth-century literary scene. As editor of the prestigious Overland Monthly, he helped mentor numerous writers, including Mark Twain and Ambrose Bierce. He feuded colorfully with other critics, particularly Twain, and corresponded with W. D. Howells, Wait Whitman, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and James Russell Lowell. At his death, he left a legacy of numerous books and short stories. Gary Scharnhorst has gathered a selection of 259 of his letters into a definitive portrait of Bret Harte through his own words.
