Seller's Description:
This very rare third edition 2 volume set was published in 1871 by Trübner in London. It is an ex-library set from a collection of the historic Enoch Pratt Library, one of the oldest free public library systems in the United States, and was originally gifted in '33 from an even older library, the Mercantile Library Association of Baltimore. It contains leather covered boards with a replaced cloth-bound spine. Centered on each front board is a beautiful gold embossed seal of Ganesha (elephant-headed god), appropriately the patron god of scribes and authors. The books are in fair condition overall. The boards show heavy corner wear and moderate edge wear. The library call number sticker is fixed to the spines along with a small yellow stripe coded mark. The bottom edges of the text-blocks are stamped. The bindings are slightly weak, but all pages are intact. Brown library archival tape has been used on the hinges. End papers and paste-downs contain bookplates, cardholder, stamps and other library markings. There are signs of removal of early cardholders from the rear flyleaves and pastedowns as some of the glued Manila paper is still present. The interior pages are unmarked but tanned as is to be expected from a set over aged over 150 years. The books will be carefully packaged for shipment for protection from the elements in a customized box and bubblewrap. Contains Vol. 1: lxxi + 384 pp., Vol. 2: 415 pp. + a 31 page advert at the end of Vol. 2. USPS electronic tracking number issued free of charge. 870 pages. Works by HH. Wilson.
