A vegetarian, anti-alcoholic and opponent of smoking, he also championed the ideals of the life reform movement. Prince Max spent most of his life as a professor in Friborg (Switzerland). In view of his material modesty and helpfulness to all those in need, there were many, after his death, who were convinced they had lived alongside a saint.
