Father Bill Shannon has done a superlative job of interpreting Guigo's Ladder into modern English for the use of people desiring to pursue the deeper spirituality of unfused prayer. By avoiding the complicated metaphors one finds in John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila - no "dark nights" or numbered "chambers" of one's "interior castle" - Shannon turns the Ladder on its side and allows one to embrace a more "user-friendly" explanation of the human journey into total relationship with our Creator. And then, Shannon completes Guigo's four steps by reminding the reader that being transformed to the will and presence of God is only fully accomplished by a fifth "rung" in the Ladder - operatio. It is only when the contemplative submits to God's will and then acts to bring it to fruition that the mystery of "union with God" begins to transform the world. It's not an easy book to find, but it is well worth the search. God's peace to all.
