This work provides an in-depth analysis of two Islamist political parties in Pakistan, the highly influential"Jamaat-e-Islami"(JI) and""the more militant"Jamaat-ud-Dawa"(JD), which is widely blamed for the November 2008 terror attack in Mumbai, India. Humeira Iqtidar offers a fine-grained account of the workings of these groups, illuminates the impact of women on Pakistani Islamism, and challenges received ideas about the relationship between the ideology of secularism and the processes of secularization. The result is a significant contribution to our understanding of emerging trends in Muslim politics in a country that is much on the minds of policymakers and students of Islamic militancy. Building on extensive ethnographic work with these two parties in Lahore, Iqtidar shows that these Islamists can be seen to be facilitating a kind of secularization in Muslim societies, even as they vehemently oppose secularism. Secularism as an ideal and secularization as a process are usually seen as working in tandem, but Iqtidar argues that these Islamist groups participate in secularization through their objectification of religion, their competition among one another, and their focus on the state as the center of Islamist activity. This irony or incongruityborn, argues Iqtidar, of inadequate theorizations of the secularneeds to be appreciated before we can truly understand the political context in which Pakistan s Islamist parties operate."
