Too often the focal point of space music (as it's been called) has been limited to ambience. Ambience by itself, though, leaves a lot to be desired. Enter Nashville studio musician Giles Reaves (keyboards, synthesizers, percussion, etc.). On Sea of Glass, his fourth release and first on the Hearts of Space label, Reaves comes full circle putting all the pieces together. What you'll find here are seven tracks beautifully segued together, which form a cohesive whole. The stitching is seamless, and a number of different moods and ideas are explored without interruption. The songs here are actually soundscapes, at times depicting visual representations. This is not background music. Instead, Reaves strikes the right balance, creating structures which are both pleasing enough melodically to hold your interest, while ambient enough to captivate your imagination. For the most part, Reaves doesn't write songs as much as he builds them layer by layer. While synthesizers dominate the recording, Reaves makes use of a variety of different instruments. And, he is also never at a loss to find the right texture; synthetic or otherwise, to make his point. Taken as a whole, Sea of Glass is a measure of peaceful bliss, which leads to a transcendental meditative state. While critical acceptance and skepticism of the space music movement still exist, Sea of Glass is as unique and wonderful a recording as you're likely to find in any genre. It also opens up many new and exciting possibilities. ~ Jeri Montesano, Rovi
