1994 marked the centenary of the respective death and birth of two great classical archaeologists, Sir Charles Newton and Sir Bernard Ashmole. Ashmole continued much of Newton's work on Greek sculpture from Caria and the Dodecanese, from which the friezes of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and the Demeter of Cnidus are particularly well-known.
