When I got my scleroderma diagnosis, I researched the top clinics and the effectiveness of the medications they use. I found out that clinical trials proved that virtually all of the meds don't do anything. Then, I found this book. It has a cheesy title, but I got past that, bought it., and read it.
Henry Scammell takes us back to the days when antibiotics were a new medication, and doctors had the freedom to try them on every disease that walked in the door. What one of them found in the 1950s, was that antibiotics can effectively stop and reverse all of the symptoms of scleroderma. Scammell explains why the infection is difficult to culture, why the antibiotics work, and how doctors found the best protocol for treating scleroderma. He tells the remarkable story of a real woman who recovered completely from scleroderma, paving the way for those of us who have followed the antibiotic treatment to recovery from a disease rightfully compared to leprosy. (She is as of this writing, still heathy and disease-free for approximately 20 years).
Compared to the standard treatment of palliative care with ineffective medications offered to most scleroderma patients, this treatment offers relatively benign medications and recovery from the disease. This book offers the scleroderma patient access to a treatment that is an approved treatment not usually offered by most rheumatologists. The resistance of some rheumatologists to this treatment may require a patient to change a doctor who will treat scleroderma with antibiotics, but the benefits far out weigh making that change. This book is empowering to those who are looking for the treatment that can make them well, and have the confidence to pursue it.
As of today, January 2, 2010, I am five months into antibiotic treatment and have only minor symptoms left. I will continue this treatment until I am in remission. This book gave me the nudge to start looking for a new doctor, and subsequently gave me back my health. I recommend it as a must-read for every person with scleroderma.
